Swimming With the Sea Lions of Los Islotes

At the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, with journey constraints in position globally, we introduced a new collection — The Globe Via a Lens — in which photojournalists assistance transport you, virtually, to some of our planet’s most gorgeous and intriguing destinations. This week, Benjamin Lowy shares a collection of photos from an underwater shoot off the coast of Baja.

Nestled off the coast of Baja California Sur, in close proximity to La Paz, lies a string of islands in the Sea of Cortez — including Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida. Portion of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and just one of Mexico’s top eco-tourism places, these islands, alongside with their surrounding reefs and outcrops, are property to plenty of types of marine everyday living.

At the northern suggestion of the chain, just outside of Isla Partida, is a modest craggy outcrop — around a quarter mile extensive — known as Los Islotes, or Isla Lobos. Here, wherever few people today have obtain, life a substantial colony of sea lions.

I frequented the place on one of my first underwater assignments, right after years put in masking war, politics and athletics. Diving there was a transformational encounter. By itself, floating in the open water, I uncovered peace between these playful animals, often referred to as “dogs of the sea.”

Sea lions genuinely do seem like canines: They enjoy fetch with rocks, starfish and the occasional bone, and they typically seem to be enamored by the couple people who swim with them. They continuously nibbled at my fins, or stared at their reflection in the dome of my underwater camera housing.

Swimming all around the circumference of Los Islotes is doable, however the water in some spots is quite shallow, and entry is usually restricted by tour guides. Youthful adolescent sea lions can be viewed playing in the surf and sunbathing on rocks. The bark of dominant males echoes higher than and beneath the water as they patrol the sea for threats to the colony and to their rule. Previously mentioned the drinking water, the animals populate every rocky outcropping, lying prostrate in the sunshine.

Each individual facet of Los Islotes delivers a distinctive glimpse at the sea lions’ routines. Large rocks jut from the seabed on the northern aspect, obtaining eroded off the island extensive ago. The sea lions frolic again and forth in these underwater obstacles, chasing each and every other as a result of the rocky crevices.

The southern facet of the island is where the males sit and sunbathe. Territorial and ferocious, these gigantic males can be risky and should really be specified a broad berth.

In the vicinity of the japanese suggestion of the island is a large arch that rises from the sea. There, divers can drop down to 50 ft, stare up and view the silhouettes of sea lions as they swim from just one facet of the island to the other.

Possibly most charming of all: Concealed on the southern side of the islands, within a tiny nonetheless conveniently available underwater cave, is a sea lion “nursery.” Small juveniles dart back again and forth less than the watchful eye of older ladies.

However, even these guarded sea lions can’t prevent the encroachment of humans they can once in a while be viewed with fishing line wrapped all around their necks, which can direct to an infection and loss of life. And therein lies portion of the problem for local maritime park rangers and researchers: how to strike the correct harmony involving conservation, education and eco-tourism.

In a way, it is related to the stability I check out to strike myself: My mission as a photographer is to connect what I see and experience to an viewers. My mission as a father is to educate my young children about the globe all over them, and about the conservation of the atmosphere.

Lots of of these pictures were created with my spouse and boys by my aspect. (These waters, immediately after all, are the place my son realized how to scuba dive under the tutelage of a lifelong close friend.) And I have nevertheless to come across a photographic subject that has brought me more peace and tranquillity than swimming with the sea lions of Los Islotes.
